Maize Variety: Barnali

Scientific name: Zea mays L. cv. Barnali

Important Features of the Variety

Developed by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute(BARI), Gazipur, Bangladesh
Method of development/origin The variety was developed in Bangladesh through mass selection from a CIMMYT composite ”Neelum”.
Year of release 1986
Main characteristics It is a composite variety. Deep anthocyanin and 1st   leaf sheath and medium pigmentation in leaf sheath at 2-leaf stage. Plant height is greater than local variety. Plant and ear height ranged from 200-210 cm and 100-105cm, respectively.   Ear is large size and pointed at the end, top portion of ear coating with hard coat, kernels are golden yellow and flint type. Grain yellow color and large size, 1000 grain weight 245-320 gram.

 

Planting season and time Rabi: Mid November to Mid- December
Harvesting time Ripening time require in Rabi season 140-145 days and 95-100 days in Kharif season.

 

Yield Yield in Rabi season 5.5-6 t/ha and 4-4.5 t/ha in Kharif season
Quality of the product Carotene is high in Barnali variety.
